This Venetian violin from ca 1750 has had several layers of retouch varnish on top of the original, the thickest and darkest on top, applied after an unsuccessful corner repair. After many many hours of carefully cleaning the varnish, followed by multiple crack-, corner- and edge repair this violin made its transformation to a stunning beauty.
The previous corner repair had un-matching grain lines. Probably for this reason the repairer decided to hide his work by darkening the whole violin. The new corner has a light retouch, matching in appearance the wear and age of the rest of the instrument.
